Flooding and its Victims

It has rained and it continues to rain. Over fifteen districts have been affected in Malawi and one of the districts is Balaka. On 15 February 2015 the Andiamo Secondary School Young Christian Students (YCS) executive committee members went to Lupanga village, a village that is making boundary with us to assess the damage with an aim to help some victims. Out of many victims, the students found a fellow student, who is not in school though.

He is Kasimu Kapatile Wasi. Kasimu is an orphan (he lost both his parents) and has two brothers. Currently, he is a Form 2 student at St Charles Lwangwa but because of school fees problem, he is just staying at “home”. Half of his hut fell down due to heavy rains and all his belongings are exposed and therefore not safe.

Kasimu is just one among many who are finding it tough to cope with the aftermath of the floods…

Kasiteni to represent Malawi at Southern Africa Cross Country

Kefasi Kasiteni, a form 4 student at Andiamo Secondary School will represent Malawi at the Southern Africa Cross-Country on February 21 at Freedom Park in Blantyre.

Kasiteni finished as the champion in the senior men’s category last week at a national cross country at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe. He is among the 24 athletes identified to represent Malawi at the Southern Africa Cross-Country.

It has been reported that about 10 countries have confirmed their participation. These include Zambia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Angola.

This is not the first time that Kasiteni is representing Malawi. Last year, he was among the Malawian athletes in Scotland Commonwealth Games.

These results have not come as a surprise to Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT) because Andiamo Education Institutions (AEI) have deliberately invested in athletics through Inter Schools Hope Trophy to make sure that the game of athletics is promoted in schools. Some of the athletes identified through these competitions are offered sponsorship to study at Andiamo Secondary School to make sure that they [athletes] also work hard in school.

Dream Coming True?

The dream is to have a new Andiamo Technical College separate from the Andiamo Secondary School. Apart from Tailoring and Designing, Electrical Installation, Motor Vehicle Mechanics, and Carpentry and Joinery which the college is offering, we want to introduce a course in Plumbing. This is our big dream. Today we went to the site where this big project can be constructed. Fr Mario Pacifici, our founding trustee shared the plan with Tito, the volunteer who is an architect.

On this piece of land, we shall have classrooms, library, staff room and two big hostels specifically for the technical college. Once this project is finalised, the students intake will also increase thereby giving vocational training to many youths. We are saying that it is just a dream. Dream with us!

Sharing the dream…

This morning we visited the Comfort Community Hospital and Andiamo Education Institutions (AEI) campus representing the pillars Healthcare and Education respectively and the following is what met the lens of our camera and it is very encouraging that people in these institutions share our dream of giving the best service to the community of Balaka and beyond…

It’s tomorrow and we are with you

71% treated were children at CCH

71% treated were children at CCH

Tomorrow, Saturday 31 January 2015 all our eyes will be in Bergamo, Italy where Orizzonte Malawi Onlus has organized a dinner with the aim to support our Comfort Community Hospital.

It is not a three-course dinner, we are told. It is but a dinner which is called “poor dinner” because the food to be served is like that food that the peasants used to eat in Italy. This is not the first time that this kind of dinner has been organized for this cause. It was done before and it has been a success.

The writer of this article has never been to Italy. If I happen to go to Italy, it would not to see if Italy has good people. No. Through gatherings like this one, we have seen the goodness of people from Italy and we don’t need any proof.

We haven’t sent to Italy pictures of children dying from curable diseases. I bet if we were asked to send, we would do than in albums. But through simple gatherings like this many people of goodwill, have heard our cry and have understood that they must do something and the results are showing… The pictures we are sending to you now, are of children getting treatment because you did something and you continue to help us.

For example, in 2014 Comfort Community Hospital (CCH) treated 63,457 patients and 45,279 were children. If we compare to the 2013 figure of 34, 354, we see that in the year just ended we reached to many patients. We are not celebrating the figure of many people treated at CCH but we are grateful to you “few people” who are making a difference to many people here in Balaka, Malawi.

As it has been said elsewhere, “let us join hands and put our drops of love together forming an ocean of solidarity for our COMFORT COMMUNITY HOSPITAL in BALAKA”.

We wish you well as you gather together to save lives here in Balaka, Malawi. We love you all.cp 15 locandina

Time to press the panicking button?

The Department of Climate Change and Weather Services says a storm will hit the Southern Region of Malawi while the rest of the country will be a “wet week”, Elina Kaluluma has told the Nation of Wednesday, January 28 2015. Districts such as Blantyre, Zomba and Mulanje will bear worse effects starting from today, Thursday, January 29.

We have reasons to be worried. Very worried. The cost could be too much. We lost already a 20-metre long wall fence that fell due to heavy rains and we may also lose the symbolic stage where we celebrated the 35 years of the Alleluya band. It could be not the time to press the panicking button but we must be prepared for the worse…

Is it a Coincidence?

People waiting to receive treatment at CCH

Last week Comfort Community Hospital (CCH) reported that 19 January 2015 was recorded as their busiest day after they treated 331 children beating the record set in April 2014.

19 January? This is not any other day here at Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust (AYCT). It is not only a Feast Day for Fr. Mario Pacifici, our founding trustee but it is also a birthday for the Alleluya band. It is through the Alleluya band on 19 January 1978 that the dream of  AYCT started.

Was 19 January, a coincidence to be the busiest day of CCH? Let us ask the dreamer himself, Fr. Mario Pacifici. Any way, we thank you for supporting a 37 year old dream!

Monday, 19 January 2015 is the busiest day at Comfort Community Hospital (CCH) after treating 331 children beating the record of 283 set in April 2014.

According to the records at CCH, the busiest months of the year at CCH have just started. This is so mostly due to malaria and respiratory infections (due to the rainy season. Meanwhile Orizzonte Malawi has organized the dinner for the poor with the aim to support the Comfort Community Hospital on 31 January 2015 with the aim to support our Comfort Community Hospital, which treated over 60,000 patients in the year 2014.

Double Celebrations Today at AYCT

Alleluya band in one of the tours in Italy

Alleluya band in one of the tours in Italy

Today we celebrate the birthday of Alleluya band and the Feast day of our founding trustee Fr. Mario Pacifici. Alleluya band was born on 19 January 1978 on the feast day of Fr. Mario.

We are not throwing a party per se. Our happiness is in our hearts when we count the blessings the formation of the band has brought to the people of Balaka and beyond. Through the band, Andiamo Cooperative Trust was born and through the four pillars of Education; Healthcare; Social Development; and Culture Sports and Culture we continue to give people a dignified life. Our joy is when our children access medical treatment for free at Comfort Community Hospital. Our joy is when our young boys and girls get quality education through our education institutions. Our joy is when our youth get employment. Yes, our joy is when the elderly our given a decent accommodation. We are happy when the throw away culture doesn’t find room among us. Long live Alleluya Band! Happy Feast Day to Fr. Mario Pacifici.

Floods claim 176 lives

The floods and hailstorms in Malawi have killed 176 people and displaced 174,000. According to media reports, Malawi needs over K5 billion (€9.5 Million) to “rehabilitate and provide relief to the victims”. Chikhwawa and Nsanje districts only are feared to have lost 159 people.

Malawi’s vice president Saulos Chilima has told the Weekend Nation of Saturday, 17 January 2015 that as the rescue team continues, there is need to source tents.

“We have to provide accommodation for the survivors. We have to see whether certain structures can be rehabilitated quickly. The affected people have to be fed too.”

The floods have also damaged the water system and also destroyed pit latrines in the areas affected. A visit to some areas around Andiamo Trust in Balaka district has revealed that people are using make shift toilets since their toilets have collapsed.

Meanwhile the president Peter Mutharika cheered the flood victims in Balaka and Mangochi on Friday. The President has since assured the people affected by the disaster that, his government will give them total support and assistance to curtail the sufferings they are going through.

Malawi president declared Malawi a State of disaster. About 17 districts have been affected due to continuous downpour in past two weeks.
