Four youths from Balaka, participated in the National Cross Country Competitions on Saturday, 9 February at Kamuzu Institute of Sports in Lilongwe.

Guided by trainers Mr. Dennis Phiri and Miss Dalitso Starlet, the four athletes have shown that they are improving their talent mainly in running long distances.

Eleven year old, Enelessi, from Mbera, who is in Standard 8, having won the regional competitions in Zomba 2 months ago, registered another positive result finishing 13 out of more than 100 athletes across the country. Her friend Hilda Kawenda from Andiamo Secondary School finished 21 in the same Junior Girls 6 km.

Eric James and Ulanda finished on 14 and 23 respectively in the 8 km Junior for the Boys.

This was the first time that these athletes took part in the national competition. The athletes say lessons learnt will renew their passion for running and they look forward to register better results.

The trip from Balaka to Lilongwe was made possible because of the support from Franco Fiorina, a volunteer of Andiamo Youth Cooperative Trust and the Andiamo Education Office, through the Andiamo Wings of Hope Association of Athletes (a sports association of Andiamo that gives opportunities of training and competitions to different sports to the youth of Balaka).
