SPORTS AND CULTURE
Creating spaces for expression, learning, and community in Balaka
With the support of Orizzonte Malawi Onlus and other valued partners, Andiamo promotes sports and culture as pathways for education, inclusion, creativity, and community participation. Through music, reading, sports events, and public sensitisation activities, we create opportunities for children, youth, and families to learn, express themselves, and come together.
Our work in Sports and Culture includes:
- Music and cultural promotion through Alleluya Band
- Sensitisation and awareness campaigns linked to music and sports days.
- Reading and cultural exchange through the African Library
- Ongoing efforts to activate Andiamo’s cultural centre
- Sports programmes and community events, including Balaka Run.
Alleluya Band
Alleluya Band is one of the cultural hearts of Andiamo. Supported by Orizzonte Malawi Onlus and partners, the band promotes Malawian music and culture through performances in Malawi and abroad, while also supporting community projects and sharing messages of hope, solidarity, and social awareness.
African Library
Supported by SunChild Foundation, the African Library (with over 4,000 books) at Andiamo offers a space for reading, study, and discovery on the Andiamo campus in Balaka. With a growing collection of books centred on African authors, stories, and perspectives, it supports students, teachers, and community members, and forms part of Andiamo’s wider effort to activate its cultural centre.
Sports and Community Events
Sports activities and events help promote teamwork, discipline, inclusion, and healthy lifestyles among children and young people. They also create safe and positive opportunities for participation within the wider community.
Balaka Run
Balaka Run is Andiamo’s annual “Education Through Sports” cross-country event, bringing together students, athletes, and community members. The event promotes physical health and community pride while raising awareness about education, child protection, and other social issues.
Sensitisation through Music and Sports
Andiamo also uses music and sports days as moments for sensitisation and awareness-raising. These events help share messages about education, health, child protection, and social inclusion in ways that are engaging and accessible.
A Cultural Centre in Development
Andiamo is working to activate its cultural centre as a space for music, reading, arts, dialogue, and community initiatives. Building on the experience of the Alleluya Band, the African Library, and public events, this centre aims to strengthen cultural life in Balaka.
Why sports and culture matter
Sports and culture help strengthen community bonds, support young people’s development, and create space for talent, identity, and participation. For Andiamo, they are an important part of building a more connected, confident, and inclusive community.
