Do we
still have street children?
In
the past ten years, the story of street children was very popular
among the cities of Malawi. A day could not pass without journalists
making a statement in the radios and newspapers. This was to make
sure that children should be given their rights and freedoms.
Nowadays,
a lot of revolutions have taken place. Talk of vending along the
streets is now forbidden. In such circumstance, children were becoming
thieves at a tender age of which such children did not have the
future. But as the situation was scrutinized meticulously, some
of these problems were emanating form orphanage brought about by
HIV/AIDS, traditional beliefs among other factors. Government &
Non governmental Organizations did not shun away. Efforts were gathered
to make such children reliable citizens. They were given different
opportunities like sending them back to school, taking them into
reformatory centers and the like. Although there are some few street
children here and there but the situation has improved.
Only
street children are recognised quickly hence they live in cities
and towns. But as we can go deep down in our respective villages,
will get a lot of kids vagabonding having nothing to do while their
fellows are at school. This doesn’t mean that the kids don’t
like to attend classes, but most of them lack basic needs like clothes,
soap among other items. There are few individuals who can help but
unfortunately, they also don’t have enough for their families.
If some families are failing to afford salt, will they manage to
pay school fees for their kids at secondary schools? Since primary
school education is at no cost. Although there are measures taken
to make sure that these children should be productive, but still
there is a long way to go. If some people who feel pathetic and
sympathize with such children and families can take the initiative
of helping them. Especially for the children to realize their dreams
they need to go to school. How can one be a president and yet in
his/her life has never been in class?
