Emergency Cholera: Andiamo builts a Cholera Camp at Governmet District Hospital

Each and every year as Malawi goes into the rainy season, a contagious disease is born in the name of cholera. The disease is fatal as it claims a lot of lives each time it appears.

Poor people are the most vulnerable as the disease spreads most through contaminated food and water. The rains and more advantage to the spread of the disease and those households that do not have access to treated water get affect.

Balaka is also one such district that records a high number of cases of the disease whilst there is only little space at the Government District Hospital for patients even during the dry season due to the increase in population rendering wards at the hospital insufficient as evidenced by two patients sleeping at one single bed whilst others are underneath the bed, the Cholera outbreak makes it even more worse as patients with the diseased must be quarantined to avoid further spread of the disease.

It is in this instance that Africa Tremilla, an Italian Association has agreed to fund a project that will see the construction of cholera wards. Africa Tremilla came forward to the rescue of the Ministry of health through the initiative of Andiamo Trust

The foundation of the project has already been dug pending construction to begin. The project has been managed to be ready by October 2010.

Cholera is often fatal and can lead to death if it is left untreated immediately. Symptoms include; severe diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration. It is transmitted through abandoned personal hygiene, poor sanitation and contaminated water.
