Chikondi Nursery School: beautiful and possible

What started as a dream for the parents of Toleza and the surrounding Villages in the late 80’s, when parents were using their little resources in the Toleza catholic outstation Church building of Balaka parish to help their toddlers learn at that tender age and failed due to insufficiency and poverty, has at last come true.

Chikondi Nursery school has officially opened its doors with the blessing of the MP of the area, Honourable Getrude Maseko, who even skipped parliament deliberation to grace the opening of the school which she said is a step ahead in the development of the constituency and Malawi as a whole. “Let us all welcome this facility and we will only show our appreciation to Agostino Trussardi , his friends and Andiamo trust that have seen the project to the end, by taking well good care of it and sending our Children to learn”, said Hon. Maseko. She went on to advise Chiefs and all responsible people to give access of land to people like Agostino who are willing to build community facilities as these. “These are the infrastructures that will directly benefit the community and our President Dr. Bingu Wa Mutharika is commending them because they are developmental projects added Hon. Maseko” She urged parents especially women to work hard in their development projects as now they will not be bothered by cooking and attending to their young ones because they will be in school. She asked other well wishers to come fourth and help people at Nambira and Khwisa with a nursery school. The Mp said these after planting the tree of hope and cutting the rope marking Chikondi Nursery Officially Opened.
Agostino, simply called “AGO” by the toleza community, funded the project with assistance from his friends and Andiamo trust that raised the structure in memory of his beloved wife and Son who passed away (may their souls rest in peace). Agostino was proud to see the opening that he could not speak from the heart but read the speech. He thanked all those that helped in the construction of the nursery especially friends and volunteers who vested their trust in him to do the project.

“A planted tree doesn’t grow tomorrow and start producing fruits the other day, NO!, it takes time and when it is well taken care of, it produces desired yields” said Fr. Mario Pacifici in his speech, He thanked Agostino for his heart to which whose dream was being realized at the function. He pledged for the support of the community to help make sure the place is safe and secure enough to stay longer. He went on to ask Hon. Maseko to continue initiating for the installation of electricity at the school as the other part has been started already by Andiamo. He then thanked toleza farm for helping in the supply of firewood being used to cook for the children while pending for the coming of electricity.

The opening of the school saw a lot of dignitaries such as the Chief executive for Balaka, the District Education Manager for Balaka, Chiefs, Andiamo Trust Executive Director, members from the media, Judiciary, Toleza farm Manager and other dignitaries.

Chikondi Nursery has currently registered almost 300 kids of which some are coming from villages (Mandevu Village) that are almost 15 to 20 Kilometres away. The kids also showed their appreciation by reciting the alphabet, counting numbers, touching parts, of the body, identifying colours and going through the Calendar giving a clear meaning that the teachers are indeed working very hard.

The event taking place on 27th January 2010, was spiced by traditional dances, poems and Alleluya Band.
