HISTORY OF ANDIAMO
It
all started in 1984, in the course of the final stage of a youth
group programme in Balaka Parish. After attending different stages
or levels of formation in Christian Youth Groups, the youth thought
of asking the Parish Priest to share with them some of the activities
experienced by the youth in Europe, especially in Italy.
He
suggested a few, and the boys opted for one called "Family
Development Project". Initially, the group accommodated only
some school drop-outs from Std 8 –From 2, because it was believed
that those who passed Form 4 could easily get an employment.
Later
on the name was changed into Andiamo Co-operative Society. Usually
in a co-operative the owners contribute either financially or materially.
But in this case, things functioned differently: the youth were
the contributors. The development and sustainability of the co-operative
depended on the dedication, professional skills, abilities and capabilities
of its members.
On
July 1st 1999, Andiamo, through the National Youth Council of Malawi,
was officially recognised by the Government, receiving its certification
under the name of "Andiamo Youth Co-operative".
On
May 30th 2006, Andiamo was registered under the "Trustees Incorporation
Act", consequently becoming "Andiamo Youth Co-operative
Trust".
